Genre

The genre of are film is a Drama; they are heavily plot driven and rely on the development of their characters. They usually focus on issues that the audience can relate to such as racism, poverty, crime etc. Are film best suits this genre because we are focusing on the recession that we are currently in at the moment, this is what the audience can relate to and understand and that this is the issue that are film is focusing on in are film. In are film we try to develop the main character as much as we can in the time we have available, we do this by putting the character in situation where he has to show what kind of person he is, such as the tramp situation at the bus stop we want the audience to have an idea of his character and the use of the picture in the wallet gives the audience some idea of his private life but we didn’t want to focus to strongly on that side of his life only make reference to it. We tried developing the character as much as we can in the time frame. An example of this genre is the film This is England were the story is about racism in the 80’s the story is heavily dependent on the main character, much like are film were we follow a day in the life of the main character that is a convention that we stuck very closely using the characters to tell the story. A short film that follows this genre is Salary man 7 which is about a subject that the audience can relate to, even though the character has nearly no development it is the situation that drives the story. In a genre the character has to go through a conflict with either himself or the community, in are film we stick to this convention as we see him having conflicts with his own feelings towards the tramp but even still it he is still showing that he only cares about himself.

There are sub-genres that are film can fit into like Docudrama, the conventions of them are that they focus on a period of time and highlight the issues during that period using fictional characters to tell the story. This is much like are film because we are showing the modern day and the effects of the recession of the community today and we use fictional characters to tell a story that the audience can relate to at this time. The convention of this is that the plot drives the story and doesn’t really on special effects or comedy to tell the story. We challenge this convention as we have humour throughout are film to break the seriousness of are film so that the audience can have a range of feelings when they watch the film. An example of this is Saving Private Ryan which was set during the 2nd World War but was about fictional characters this is an example of a Docudrama.
